Job 32 – 42

How you speak truth is as important as the truth you speak. Truth simply is. It is unchanging, because it is of God. Fallible people are charged with spreading the truth of God to other fallible people. Sometimes error comes in what is said. In the case of Elihu speaking to Job and his three friends, error comes in how he said the things that are true.

At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison—that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Colossians 4:3-6

Notice Paul wasn’t asking for prayers for WHAT he should preach, but HOW he should preach it. In his humble request for prayers and the guiding hand of God, he admonishes us to choose words wisely while not compromising truth. Put yourself in their shoes and sit with these men while a fifth man speaks up.

Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker. For truly my words are not false; one who is perfect in knowledge is with you.

Job 36:2-4

The natural response to that sort of statement is not “what is the wisdom in your words?”, but rather, “Just who do you think you are?” The truth he speaks is clouded by his lack of grace. The words he serves them are tasteless because of his lack of salt. Even when he condemns self-righteousness, his own arrogance shouts down his words.

We can learn much from good examples of what not to do. When we answer the divine call to speak to other people the great truths of God, we must choose our words and tone carefully. Never allows the method of delivery to overshadow the point.

It is at this moment that Yahweh finally speaks up. The message is clear. Elohim knows all. His righteousness and justice are beyond reproach. His wisdom is beyond mortal comprehension. His power is on display in His universe. His goodness is on display in the latter part of Job’s life where the blessing flowed more than in the former days.

In spite of all the things these men said about Him, God did not change. In spite of all that life dealt him, Job did not lose his integrity. In poverty and in abundance he honored God. Because He is Who He is, Yahweh honored Job and blessed him in his perseverance.

Consider His nature.  Consider His ways.  Strive to love Him more!
