2 CORINTHIANS 1:1-24
Paul’s dealings with the brethren in Corinth had been frustrating and rewarding. Sure enough, he was contending for the gospel of Jesus Christ. But, what did that really mean? It means he was contending for their souls. All he endured for them and they endured was toward the eternal blessing of salvation.
Trouble often obscures the goal
His first letter to them was filled with instruction and scolding. Somewhere between a parent – child and a teacher – student relationship, this ministry was very personal to him. So, now he writes again, but this time with joy. They had listened.
Trouble often goes without comfort
Paul knew that his ministry to the brethren was a mere extension of God’s ministry to them. So intertwined are Christians that the God of all comfort uses us to comfort the hurting. Paul says that we are comforted so that we can be a comfort to others. It’s so hard to imagine the night of Jesus’ betrayal when He suffered alone. Only the angels were there to minister to Him.
God never wants to see another child suffer alone.
We have the example of both Jesus and Paul. Each of them acted selflessly on behalf of others. Both sought to comfort the afflicted. Through each one, the brethren in Corinth and all who meditate on these words can understand.
Comfort in trials keeps Christians firm in the faith.
Why does God bear with us? Why didn’t Paul just write off the Corinthians? For the sake of their joy. May we cherish every opportunity to be God’s comfort for others!
