HABAKKUK 3:1-19
The prophet Habakkuk is a contemporary of Jeremiah and he foretold and saw the coming judgment upon Jerusalem. Imagine yourself in your hometown trying to stop the injustice and cruelty. All the while you knew that destruction was coming. Seemingly, no one was listening.
Truth has never depended upon acceptance
The God of covenant had brought these people out of Egypt and through the wilderness. They had been given a fertile land to cultivate and keep. This land would yield abundantly when both the early rain and the latter rain watered the crops. God Himself promised to keep the rain coming as long as the people kept the covenant. Now, they had broken the covenant.
People will let you down
Habakkuk thinks back to the triumph of God’s judgments against nations. He pronounces the victory of God’s righteousness. And he knows that time is short for Judah and Jerusalem. He also knows that God is merciful.
God will never let you down
The fig tree and grapevine were sweet fruit for the Hebrews, but their faith could not be in grapes and figs or their ability to grow them. God is God of harvest. Their fields and their flocks were the source of their livelihood, but their faith was in the God who gives abundantly. Habakkuk knew the days of abundance were over.
Joy must never be in our things
His conclusion is one of the most fundamentally profound in all the Bible. His physical life depended upon the food and produce from the land, but his spirit drew life and strength from God. When our joy is misplaced, it is fleeting when physical things fail us. When our joy is in God, we can rejoice in poverty and abundance.
