EXODUS 12:1-51
A celebration to last throughout the generations centered around a little, spotless lamb. The lamb was destined to die. Each family would provide an unblemished lamb and his blood would mark the home as a dwelling place of the saved ones. With the deaths of the firstborn sons of Egypt the plagues would conclude and the children of Israel would be free from their bondage.
The LORD God had mercy on the oppressed
The power of Joseph to influence the state of Egypt had long passed into history. His cousins and their children had grown many-fold into a people to be feared. Fear gave way to subjection and subjection gave way to oppression. The cruelty of the bondage provoke cries of distress from these descendants of Abraham who lived in a land that was not theirs.
The LORD God showed no mercy to the oppressor
They had no power of their own to resist and so they had no hope they could throw off the chains. One of their own who had been raised in the royal family before running away to live in the desert comes back “home”. He wasn’t the one they wanted, but he was exactly what they needed. He was God’s chosen one. Pharaoh would listen to him. God was working through him.
The LORD God raised up a Deliverer
These were some amazing days that witnessed the great struggle between a powerful man who thought himself a god and the God who empowered a man. The people were sidelined, but their destiny rested on the outcome of this great struggle. Miracles and signs became commonplace and the impossible became routine. The stubborn pride of Pharaoh placed every firstborn male child – Hebrew and Gentile – at risk of falling to the Death Angel.
The LORD God provided a substitute
But, God. While the Hebrews were still helpless, an innocent little lamb without spot or blemish would be sacrificed and his blood would mark the people as “redeemed” so the Death Angel would simply pass over the house of the obedient. 430 years of bondage were over. Suffering gives way to joy. Fear surrenders to shouts of rejoicing. A celebration is set for the people to never forget the night the LORD made them His own.
