MATTHEW 26:1-30
As the scriptures transition from the covenant through Moses to the new covenant in Jesus Christ, a subtle yet significant change occurs in the focus of memorials. In the Passover, Pentecost and other festivals and feasts, the Hebrews used animals, gold and ritual to remember the deeds of God. The very nature of the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus and the church He built inserts Yahweh Himself into our remembrance in His person as well as His deeds.
Jesus is the Lamb, the High Priest and the King
The exaltation of Jesus came through His humiliation. Not coincidentally, the “handing over” occurred EXACTLY at the time of the Passover by the perfect design of God. The paschal lambs of annual Passover remembrance of the night Yahweh judged Egypt and spared those covered by the blood of the lambs, is fulfilled in the sacrificial death of Jesus and the judgment-sparing grace of all who are covered by His blood.
The deeds are amazing, our God is … love
No other way exists to save a wretch like me. His holiness reveals my insufficiency. His love compels Him to not merely orchestrate salvation, but to BECOME my salvation. The name “Jesus” embodies this sublime truth in its meaning, “God is salvation”. So the adoration of the woman interloper at Simon’s house teaches a great lesson: look beyond the deed to the God whose loving grace and power accomplished the deeds.
This time, God did not choose a mortal man
For this all-encompassing event God became the Lamb, shed His own blood, and became the reconciliation that Satan did not anticipate. No Moses, Gideon or Abraham could accomplish what Jesus accomplished. So, no mere festival or feast is adequate for remembrance. Before the deed was done, the Almighty I Am gave us bread and wine that is a memorial to Him, not merely for what He did. Then, they sang…
