PSALM 63:1-11

Have you ever REALLY been thirsty? Thirst beckons the body to seek water for survival. The thirstier you get, the more you focus everything on relief. Why do you think the Holy Spirit inspired David to compare his longing desire for God to a thirst for water? Simply because without God, David could not survive. Nor can anyone.

Jesus calls us to hunger and thirst for righteousness

The ways of God are life sustaining. David was suffering in the wilderness where thirst was an issue. Water was an ever-present need, but it was still a secondary one. How easy it is to elevate the physical needs of this life with the spiritual needs unto life everlasting. No matter our current hardships, life comes when our desire for God’s righteousness flows from a deep desire for God Himself.

Joy produces praise

David’s circumstances were bleak, but his joy was dependent upon God, not circumstance. He would praise the glory of God in the wasteland as persistently as he would in the sanctuary. What a lesson for us all. Every day we need water, how much more do we need God? Still, our physical needs and physical circumstances seem to get in the way with regularity. The solution lies in priority.

Joy is found in seeking God, not comforts

I can live without money and conveniences, but I cannot live without water. I can even survive a while without food, but life is short with no water. When the body begins to register severe thirst, an air-conditioned home doesn’t seem so urgent. That’s because thirst causes us to prioritize the search for water.

Even a king rejoices in God

Who am I to think that my need for God is less than the comforts and conveniences of life? Who am I to think that my vocation or vacation should take precedence over my Savior? Again, it comes down to priorities and focus. Only when we diligently seek the joy of the LORD will we find joy in our blessings.
