PSALM 40:1-17
Humility. The very thought goes against our nature and our culture. Our nature is set upon the fundamental instinct to preserve self. So, a “me first” mentality is very natural to us. In the U.S., we pursue life, liberty and happiness as our birthright and proclaim and protect our rights with a peculiar fervor. Again, the “me first” mentality is seen throughout the American culture.
Humility… prerequisite for joy
David speaks of the many-faceted life of the Hebrew in this Psalm extolling our Great God. This sweet singer of Israel, the King of Judah and slayer of Goliath needed a Savior and he chose to wait patiently. Humility. God lifted him up and put a song in his mouth.
Humility … the essence of joy
Joy is found in God and therefore not in me. David sees clearly that he must relinquish trust in self and invest that trust in the LORD. For David, trust led to blessing and blessing led to proclamation. David also received further and deeper understanding. The sacrifices were not as important as the heart offering them.
Humility … insight into God’s mind
David was rich beyond believe as the king of Judah, yet before God he realized he was needy. David had everything a man could want at his command, yet before God he saw himself as needy. In humility we seek God and in joy we find Him!
