Psalm 119; Nehemiah 11:1 – 12:30; Psalms 120 – 133

The wall was complete, the gates were hung and the people returned to covenant relationship with Yahweh Elohim.  The Levites came with their instruments and the priests gathered with their rituals for purification before the LORD. The people, the leaders and the walls were consecrated. And, so they sang.

When we are right with God, joyful singing is the natural response for the child of God. Let us truly be a people of praise because we are a people consecrated to His service. The Hebrew people sang songs (psalms of ascents) as they walked up to Jerusalem for the appointed feasts and festivals. They were in fellowship with God and with each other. We find the same fellowship in the church. And, so we sing.

A Song of Ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Psalm 121

Notice the timelessness of this precious truth. Whether under the old covenant or the new, children of God must seek Him out. Our Creator is the provider of the only help to fill our greatest need. He alone is the Savior and sustainer of the human soul. And, So we sing.

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

Psalm 133

When in fellowship with Yahweh, we are in fellowship with all He has redeemed. For some, the only thing we have in common is God. That’s ok, because that is enough. The precious unity given to us is easily broken when we fail to cherish it. But, when we adore the brothers and sisters God has given us in His divine family because we adore our God, then maintaining unity becomes a lifelong priority. And, so we sing.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:5-7

In Jesus the Christ, washed by His blood, we are one with God and the church … and, so we sing!

Consider His nature.  Consider His ways.  Strive to love Him more!
