Exodus 34 – Leviticus 4

Yesterday we saw the people rebel into idolatry while Moses was on Mount Sinai with Yahweh receiving the Law. Because Moses shattered the first tablets, he had to chisel the new set himself. Then, remarkably, Elohim Shaddai (Almighty God) told Moses more about His nature. The I AM, Yahweh, is not angry. Rather He is filled with mercy, unfailing love and faithfulness. Yahweh is a forgiver … exactly what we need the most.

The Law of Moses (now known as the “Old Law” or “Old Covenant”) proscribed rules and regulations for holiness. In other words, the children of Israel would no longer live like the people of the other nations. They would be separate in conduct and worship. That’s what holiness means. God is holy because He is apart from all that is profane, indifferent, sinful and deceptive. The tabernacle, the sacrifices, the festivals and the code of personal conduct each exemplified the “separateness” of God’s people. Children of God are called to be holy, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:13).

Now Yahweh-Yireh (the LORD will provide) will soon fulfill His promises made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to give them the land of Canaan. Before they can possess the land, Elohim Shaddai will go before them and judge the Amorites (Genesis 15:16) and drive them out for the sin they have committed against Him. These were evil people. Not merely idolaters, they murdered their children to pay homage to their false gods. Knowing best for His people, God commanded them to not associate with these people and not to make treaties or marry them. In other words, they would be separate from them. In a world filled with people, but not of their nature and culture. The children of God would take on His nature – and would reject the sinful nature of the world.

So, the people gave of their wealth, time and skills to construct the tabernacle and all of its furnishings exactly as God instructed them. Yahweh honored their faithful obedience by inhabiting the Holy of Holies with His glory. Now, He would dwell in their midst while they camped and He would lead them as they moved from place to place. God was with His people.

Consider His nature. Consider His ways. Strive to love Him more!
