DEUTERONOMY 24:1-22

The way children of God relate to other people simply needs to change for us to be pleasing to God. Our passage today gives basic instructions in a variety of life circumstances. The underlying reason the Hebrews were to “buy in” was stated in the final verse: because they were freed from bondage by the LORD.

What God has done should change what we do

Friction between me and God results when I deny Him or deny to adopt His ways. Something in the back of my mind will remind me that God has called me to be holy. Something down in my heart will become unsettled until I conform to His holiness. I must always remember that He has freed me from the bondage of sin.

Some things keep me from harm

Like leprosy, sin is incurable by the hands of men. Great care is need to avoid the consequence of contact. We do not even need to fully understand all of the medical and biological reasons for God’s regulations if we fully trust Him. Somehow it makes sense when we are talking about leprosy. But, when we are talking about the consequences of sin we demand more convincing reasons. I must never forget that I have been freed from the bondage of sin.

Some things benefit others

As we do what we are called to do others benefit from our obedience. Like the borrower and the gleaner, God brings people into contact with His people and provides good for them. We don’t have to see the “big picture”, we simply need to trust enough to obey. I must live out my freedom He gives me from the bondage of sin.

Some things benefit society

God delights in justice and hates injustice. He intends for us to be instruments of righteousness and justice in this fallen world. He proscribes attitudes and actions, but we need not understand all of the possible outcomes of our obedience. Just do. God takes care of the rest. What God has done will change us, and we rejoice because He has freed us from the bondage of sin.
