LUKE 24:13-53
Whether it was His chosen 12 (now minus Judas) or His faithful disciples who heard Him teach and watched Him work wonders, all were dispirited and confused. Just a short time ago Jesus was riding into Jerusalem in triumph, being hailed as a king. Then it was over. They killed Him.
God’s unfolding plan requires patient understanding
Slowly the word got out. “He is Risen!” But, it made no sense. Jesus was dead and they all knew it. Now this. Nothing about it was in any way how they dreamed it would play out. Jesus knew this. So He appeared.
God’s plan unfolds through His word
The two disciples were just trying to make it to Emmaus while occupying themselves with the news of the day. Whether through the deliberate choice of Jesus or the distraction of excitement, they did not recognize the man they esteemed so highly. So, He taught them and gave them the essence of the Bible message about Him found in the inspired Hebrew texts.
God’s willing ones can see
Through all of that, they did not recognize Him until He broke bread with them. Suddenly, He was gone. What remained was understanding of God’s unfolding plan to redeem people from sin. Now, it was all they needed. Now, it all made sense.
God’s seeing one can tell the story
They went back to tell Peter and the other 10. It was all true. Then Jesus appeared again, blessing them with His peace. Again, He explained the unfolding plan of God. Everything had happened for a precise purpose. Nothing was by accident. This was big. This was real. This was gospel.
God’s plan was for repentance and forgiveness
This time they did not scatter, rather they followed Him where He led them. Then, He levitated. That’s right. I can’t even imagine the sight. Before they could fully comprehend, He was gone. Again. This time there was no sorrow. This time there was no confusion. This time there was worship and praise! Because this time, it all made sense.
