1 PETER 4:1-9
For the redeemed of God, the rest of our lives on earth is “on-the-job-training” in the spiritual realm. Peter encourages us to “live in the spirit the way God does”. Um…okay. What does that actually mean? The proverb of old says that one way seems right to people, but it leads to death. Perhaps the “other” way is what Peter is encouraging.
Before Jesus returns I must realize how little I know
There will be an accounting when Jesus returns. If God is truly just, then the terms of the accounting will be revealed. God IS just. The revelation of God to mankind is not a mere list of do’s and don’ts. Instead, the discerning will see the person of God and the “way God does”. In a word, we see His holiness. Separateness. Distinctiveness. Okay. Separateness from what? God’s holiness is His separateness from everything else. The totality of that separation is revealed to us on the cross, when Jesus suffered and became sin.
Before Jesus returns I must acknowledge God’s truth
Upon both the realization of this and the acceptance of this, we come to see the terms of the accounting that is coming. To “live in the spirit the way God does” is to first reject living for human passions the way people do. To “live in the spirit the way God does”, then, is to adopt the will of God as a way of life. In short, live a life of holiness.
Before Jesus returns I must be transformed
We like lists, and Peter gives us one. The parts of our nature that displease God are the things we must bring under control. Sexual drives are good and from God, but sensuality and passions place these drives above God in our lives. Joy and happiness are clearly gifts from God, unless we seek them through intoxication. Human acceptance is so joyful when found in the fellowship of the Spirit, but seeking acceptance by fallowing the crowd is the way that leads to condemnation. Any human drive or desire that is pursued instead of God, above God, or away from God is lawlessness and idolatry.
Before Jesus returns I must be like Him
Joy at His coming is the hope for all who live for Him in the time we remain in the flesh. In reality, it isn’t all that difficult or mysterious. Self-control flowing from a clear mind leads us back to Jesus and the cross. Self-control and clear mindedness draws us together in sincere and passionate brotherly love and hospitality devoid of grumbling. Our true companions are found in the church – where our sins are covered. So then, before Jesus returns…
