ECCLESIASTES 11:1-10

I simply do not want to grow old and carry the baggage of regret through my time on earth. Solomon explores the purpose of his time on earth and the many ways of filling those days with the pursuit of happiness. He concludes that this pursuit is empty. But, what of a life filled with the pursuit of joy?

Spend time giving, not hoarding

“Bread” cast upon the waters does not provide the immediate result of happiness in a return on investment. Rather, generous and widespread benevolent giving provides a joy in the giving act and a later return of God’s design and timing. Like the clouds full of water vapor, the child of God cannot help but to “rain” upon the needy. If a tree hoarded its fruit, then calamity deprives both the tree and the ground of this fruit. You will never regret a life of generosity.

Spend time in the Spirit, not in the flesh

The spiritual ways of God cannot be seen, but the works are evident to all. He created a spirit – you – for His purpose. Seek first His purpose in you, and the physical things will be provided. He said, “Let there be light”, and there is to this day. Time invested in spiritual things prepares us for days of darkness that assuredly will come. Appreciating the light builds a yearning for light. Yearning for His light produces joy.

Spend time appreciating, not regretting

Good times or bad, darkness or light, give thanks to God. Those bad times are ultimately vanity for the one who seeks joy. Enjoy THIS day and you will rejoice in ALL days. Pursue God’s righteousness and even the day of judgment will be a day of rejoicing – for your Redeemer will meet you there. No regrets!
