2 CORINTHIANS 7:1-16
Paul transitions into a discussion of repentance after establishing that God’s great desire is to separate His children from the world and truly be our Father (2 Corinthians 6:16-18). Our sin has always been the chief impediment to joy. Equipped with these promises from God, repentance is the doorway to holiness.
God’s promises unleash God’s joy
Sometimes this separation from the world and our “old ways” is rather painful. Oftentimes, old friends and family become the source of ridicule and affliction as we strive to be pleasing to God. There is great joy in the comfort that comes through fellowship with the saints. God ministers through Christians to comfort Christians, and the hurt is replaced with joy.
God’s healing comfort promotes joy
Anytime we encounter obstacles to faith and holiness we are in danger of falling away. Every Christian stumbles and God is eager to forgive. Only our own stubbornness can get in the way of restoration. The process of “completing holiness” is a struggle when we become comfortable in sin we retain. When sin no longer hurts we are in grave danger. Only true, godly sorrow can put us back on the pathway to joy.
God’s arms are always open to receive
Paul’s “complete confidence” in the Corinthian brethren was born of his ongoing relationship with them. Such encouragement to return to the living God and leave behind a world that tugs at us and tempts us must come through loving brethren who share God’s willingness to open our hearts to our brothers and sisters coming home with godly sorrow. Then, the joy of the Lord simply will overflow.
