Does God Satisfy Me?

PSALM 90:1-7

Moses calls out to God for satisfaction. Not in the sense of an appeal to a judge for a remedy to a wrong, however. Moses Calls upon God to bestow that precious gift of joy to His people. This joy and gladness that only God can give and the people of faith need so very deeply.

Can we be satisfied with joy?

From the beginning, Moses says, the people have lived with God. The inspired author of Genesis knew the wondrous things that God accomplished in “giving birth” to the earth, the home of mankind. God has given food, shelter, air to breath, gold, romance and children. He has given us community and fellowship and work to do with our hands. Seemingly, this should satisfy us.

Will we be satisfied with joy?

In the cycle of life and death – dust to dust – time passes and God is the only constant. In the cycle of sin and salvation God is the only constant for judgment and mercy. As we please and disappoint God we see the goodness and severity of our Creator. Some are satisfied in sin and ignore the consequence. Others are only satisfied in the forgiveness of God. In either case, God remains the only constant.

Do we rejoice in God as He is?

Rebelling against the ways of God and refusing to follow the will of God in defiance of the word of God is evidence of a man seeking self-satisfaction. Such a one may find fleeting happiness and pleasure for a season, but he will only be satisfied in himself. The meek willingness to bow the knee before God in loving trust is the key to satisfaction. May we ever be satisfied by the lovingkindness of God.

PHILIPPIANS 4:1-23   Some choose to find joy in turmoil. Strange. Sad to say “even” in the church some seem to thrive of engaging in discord. Such was the case in Philippi, and the Apostle Paul wanted it to end. For the Christian, worldly strife is […]
JOHN 17:1-16   Jesus knew the struggle the righteous ones face in this fallen world. His compassion for His sheep compelled Him to equip us for the fight to defend ourselves. At the same time, He equipped us to go out into the world and carry […]
PROVERBS 29:1-27   A quick glance at the news is all you need to sense the absence of justice in human society. Our nation in particular promises “justice for all”, but isolated successes notwithstanding, we fall short. From the perspective of politics we are told that […]
COLOSSIANS 1:1-29   Paul’s prayer for the church is that the saints be strengthened by God. The power that strengthens us produces endurance and patience (1:11-12) and the joy of the Lord in us. The work of grace is accomplished FOR us, so Paul prays that […]
JEREMIAH 32:1-44   When God Himself had foretold the siege and capitulation of Jerusalem, Jeremiah was His prophet. This land that was promised to the Hebrews as an inheritance was falling into the hands of the Babylonians. All would be left desolate, just as God said. […]
2 CORINTHIANS 7:1-16   Paul transitions into a discussion of repentance after establishing that God’s great desire is to separate His children from the world and truly be our Father (2 Corinthians 6:16-18). Our sin has always been the chief impediment to joy. Equipped with these […]
ISAIAH 61:1-11   In this prophecy, the Holy Spirit moves Isaiah to proclaim the promise of everlasting joy in the coming Messiah, Jesus. Centuries later, as His public appearance in Israel dawns, Jesus reads this very passage in His synagogue and declares it “fulfilled in your […]
ACTS 7:48 – 8:25   Imagine you are one of the 11 (in other words, not Judas). The past three years have been a study in the extremes of the human experience. The extreme joy of working miracles is offset by the extreme emptiness of watching […]
PSALM 9:1-20   One of the easiest sources of joy for the human mind is the downfall of an enemy. Sometimes we try quite hard to imagine what it will be like when other finally get what they deserve. Even more so when the evil is […]
